Building the Bar That Became the Brand
Bakan is a Mexican restaurant in the heart of Wynwood, and it needed a space that matched the energy of the neighborhood and the ambition of the kitchen. CM Custom Design delivered the Wynwood restaurant millwork as one coordinated system: the ceiling, the bar, the shelving, the displays, and the tile.
Fabrication Built for Daily Service
Raw enough for Wynwood and refined enough for a serious kitchen, every material was chosen to hold up to high traffic, humidity, and Miami weather: natural wood, black steel, ceramic, glass, and copper.
Wood Slat Ceiling System on a Steel Structure
The dominant element of the bar and covered terrace is a custom wood slat ceiling: warm natural wood slats running in clean parallel lines inside a black steel structural framework that divides the roof into even bays. Light filters through the open grid at the perimeter, so the terrace feels open-air. The slat system is the structure itself, engineered, fabricated, and installed as one integrated system.
Emerald Tile Bar Front & Solid Wood Top
The custom bar is clad in deep emerald green ceramic subway tile, set in a tight horizontal running bond with clean corner transitions. A warm solid wood bar top with a natural edge runs the full length of the counter, which adds warmth and texture where guests spend their time.
Live-Edge Counter & Copper Pendant Lights
Along the counter, green tile meets a live-edge wood top under copper pendant lights. Copper draft tap hardware rises from the bar top, a material detail that bridges the industrial and the artisanal in a way that suits Wynwood.
Suspended Steel Shelving for the Terrace Bar
Custom black steel shelving hangs from the ceiling structure above the bar, built to carry a working inventory of bottles and glassware. Stemware hangs from integrated glass rails under the lower shelf, and woven rattan pendants layer texture against the steel and wood.
Custom Steel & Glass Bottle Display
A fabricated steel and glass display holds the restaurant’s bottle collection and turns it into a feature wall. The steel frames are welded and finished to stay square, and the glass keeps the display visible and easy to maintain in a busy room.
Firewood Accent Wall & Fabricated Cabinet
A feature wall of stacked firewood gives the room a warm, raw backdrop, and a custom fabricated cabinet sits against it. The contrast of rough wood, steel, and glass adds depth that photographs well and still works under daily service.
Restroom Millwork Door & Geometric Wall
Even the restroom entry was treated as millwork: a custom wood door set against a geometric patterned wall, with stainless steel detailing. The details match the dining room, so the finish quality carries through the whole restaurant.
Wood Slat Pergola at the Entrance
At the street, a custom wood slat pergola on a steel frame marks the entrance and extends the ceiling language outdoors. It is built for Miami heat, sun, and rain, so the same material that defines the interior welcomes guests before they step inside.
